"Fantasy? A dream? Songs that are real. Memories that are true. Roberta Wilkes. You might be surprised."
Featuring Roberta Wilkes with Cindy Egger on guitar.
Directed by Rick Bumgardner.
Shieks, Neckers and Jellybeans is a musical revue, which features music from the 1920s and 1930s in the context of a scripted cabaret. The show evokes a performance by a cabaret singer of that era. The principal character is a vocalist who sometimes accompanies herself on the piano and sometimes relies on the accompaniment by a guitarist.
The plot involves the principal’s desire to become a famous Vaudeville Star – someone like Sophie Tucker, Mae West or Fanny Brice. Act I chronicles her path from being born into a family of traveling actors up to her current involvement in various forms of cabaret theatre. Act II is the fantasized embodiment of her dream.
The show features a costume designed by Robert Fletcher, who was the principal designer for the popular TV show – Star Trek – and many other plays, ballets and movies.
The show is appropriate for all ages. Children of 8 or over will find some part of it amusing. Two songs feature a puppet stage. Anyone interested in theatre will appreciate the history of American tent theatre and older audience members may remember such days.
